April 19, 2016: Aviation Learning Center at the Museum of Flight

Tilden’s fifth-graders were fully engaged in hands-on learning at the Aviation Learning Center. First they attended pilot ground school, studying navigation, weather, flight dynamics, instruments, weight and balance, and aircraft performance. Next they completed the pre-flight check of a real Cirrus SR20 airplane. Then they completed their flight plan to a local airfield. Finally, they followed their flight plan while flying in simulators. The entire experience was exhilarating and memorable! (And, yes, their teachers were jealous.)

March 29, 2016: Math Moves!

The fourth- and fifth-graders were in math heaven at Pacific Science Center’s Math Moves! exhibit. While visiting Pac Sci is always a highlight of the school year, this exhibit on ratios and proportions was especially enthralling. So many math challenges; so little time. Indeed, we all left wanting more. Fourth- and fifth-grade families, it’s time to experience Math Moves!

March 21, 2016: Tilden Learning Celebration

Students led the way, hosting their families for our annual Learning Celebration, which is exactly what it sounds like, a time to celebrate all the learning students have accomplished. What a joyous event! As students guided their families among the many displays, family members readily listened and commented. The result being everyone had a moment to notice, appreciate, and take pride in the learning these Tilden kids have achieved. Kudos to our hardworking students!

January 19-21, 2016: IslandWood

IMG_1053 IMG_1056 Tilden’s fifth-grade class spent three days and two nights at IslandWood, an environmental sciences school in the woods on Bainbridge Island. The program provides exceptional learning experiences with the goal of inspiring lifelong environmental stewardship. Outdoors each day, the fifth-graders studied ecosystems while living in ways that are more sustainable. Now it’s up to the fifth-grade students to continue living in more sustainable ways, encouraging their families and friends to do the same. BTW, our time at IslandWood was a blast! 🙂

October 30th, 2015: Tilden’s Halloween Carnival

Once upon a time, in the land of Tilden…there was the most spectacularly decorated, fun-filled Halloween carnival EVER! Thanks loads to all our generous parents and relatives for your hard work, creativity, and playfulness! The kids were fully engaged and overjoyed with the whole event; indeed, it was like living in a fairy tale.

June 3rd, 2015: Much Ado, Indeed!

The fifth-graders gave a charming and hilarious performance of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing for their families and the Tilden community. Under Mary Springer’s direction, with assistance from Claudia Benbow, the 5’s truly owned their roles, bantering, wooing, dancing, marrying, and performing several antics with aplomb. The outcome: an extremely entertaining performance that left the audience wanting more.

June 3rd, 2015: Launching Rockets!

3, 2, 1, BLAST OFF! Only there were 16 blast-offs! Exciting to be sure, but what made these rocket launches extra special was that each fifth-grader built his/her own rocket, launch pad, and controller from scratch. The whole process involved lessons in physics, astronomy, history, and math; working with drills, saws, screwdrivers, circuitry, and of course, protective eye gear; and the thrill of flight, accompanied by cheers and congratulatory praise. All in all, a long, challenging project well done and a huge sense of shared pride.

May 7th and 9th, 2015: The Pompeii Exhibit

At the Pacific Science Center Tilden’s fourth- and fifth-graders experienced Pompeii before and after its epic eruption 2,000 years ago. First, students learned about Pompeii’s advanced, thriving culture. Next, they were immersed in a CGI simulation of the fatal eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Finally, they examined body casts of Pompeii citizens who succumbed to the extreme heat and noxious gases of the eruption. A truly interesting and intense experience.

Tilden Students Participate in National Poem in Your Pocket Day!

IMG_9856Writing, reading, memorizing, and reciting poetry is a challenging and exciting part of Tilden’s curriculum. To celebrate the power of poetry and to honor National Poetry Month, Tilden’s students and teachers spent a wonderful day sharing favorite poems. On April 30, we each tucked a favorite poem into our pocket (or shoe!) ready to spread a little poetic sunshine.IMG_9866
