Laura has been an educator at Tilden for over 12 years. After joining the Tilden community as a parent in 2009, she quickly realized what a special place it is. She saw the unique emphasis Tilden places on kindness, community, individualization, and academic rigor—and was inspired to be a part of it. She soon began working in various roles at Tilden, including teaching assistant, librarian, billing specialist, music assistant, history teacher, and 2nd/3rd grade teacher. For the majority of her years at Tilden, she worked closely with and learned from Whitney Tjerandsen, Tilden’s founder. Laura is passionate about teaching with an emphasis on equity, inclusion, and social justice. She feels that diversity, in all of its forms, should be acknowledged and celebrated in the classroom. Laura holds bachelor of arts in history and master of arts in teaching degrees. She holds a Washington state teaching certificate, with endorsements in elementary education, English language arts, and history. Laura lives in West Seattle with her husband and three adult sons, all Tilden graduates. In addition to her love of teaching, she is passionate about music, history, and family.
